Tradies National Health Month

August is Tradies National Health Month which aims to raise awareness of the risks posed to those who work in trade occupations—among individuals, their families, employers and the wider community.

DID YOU KNOW

Tradies account for 30% of the workforce, but more than 60% of Workcover injuries?

40% of Tradies report having a niggle, but push through despite the risk for further damage?

While we’ve seen improvements, Australia’s trade industry continues to have among the highest health and safety issues of any sector. Time off work due to poor health and injury has a significant impact on families, businesses, communities, the health system and the economy. This impact will grow if we don’t take steps to change behaviour.

Why Tradies?

The health of everyone is important no matter your age, gender or occupation. But Tradies represent 60% of workplace injury, despite being only 30% of the workforce. Add to that, Tradies don't often seek the help they need, when they need it. 79% of Tradies report taking good care of their tools, but only 47% take good care of their bodies! Many Tradies are self employed or contractors - and as such, they can't afford to take time off work if they sustain a serious injury. Can you lift that? Don't try and regret it!

Safe manual handling is so important not only for Tradies, but everyone - from office workers to school kids and Mums.

It must be said that doing this as a one off may not cause issues, but the repetitive nature of most environments means that you are more susceptible for injury. Of course the spine is strong and can lift, but repetitive poor movement can cause problems.

Here is a great video of why a good lifting technique is so important!
