Functional Movement Screening

Published: March 25, 2019

Functional Movements: Movements performed on a daily basis for work, sport & hobbies or just chores!

  • Multi-joint movements that occur in multiple planes and body axes, in synergy or a set sequence.
  • Neuro-muscular- requires planning and execution by brain to ensure co-ordinated & smooth movements.
  • E.g. sit-t0-stand motion involves ankles, knees, hips, trunk, shoulders and even neck!

Fundamental Issues:

The most common issues we see are attributed to:

  1. Poor mobility of a particular area of spine e.g. Thoracic
  2. Lack of intersegmental mobility of spinal column
  3. Stiffness or restricted movement of hip joints
  4. Poor ankle mobility
  5. Or various soft tissue/muscular restrictions.

All of these can be addressed by consulting a skilled practitioner with appropriate background in strength training.

What is the most dangerous exercise??

Truly speaking, no exercise is actually ‘dangerous’. It is the execution of the movement which can pre-dispose you to the risk of injury.

Apart from this your fitness capability and training history is also critical. You cannot prevent injuries from ever happening, but you can learn how to train safely and reduce the risks significantly!

What we do?

We conduct a thorough assessment of your training and injury history, analyse your movement patterns and will address any underlying issues. Our role is to develop a program to get you stronger whilst keeping safety at forefront. This often takes time, but is more efficient way to train.

Trouble with squats or overhead press??

With squats, usually hip and ankle joint mobility and control are essential. Poor muscular control at hips can predispose you to injuries and stiff ankles can limit your capacity or performance. Similarly, with overhead movements, apart from shoulder control, your spine also plays a significant role. Talk to us to see how we can improve your mobility and enhance your training!!
