We all have trouble with our posture at times.
I know I can be complex with people, trying to iron out their headache, neck and shoulder problems in the clinic. That could be my communication, as much as how difficult it can be. We like to look at head position, is it forward and chin poked, or tilted to one side.
Where are the shoulder blades sitting? Is the shoulder blade of the dominant side dropped or rolled forward, and does this relate to their work in front of a computer, or as a tradesman?
Do they sit on the couch for hours at night watching TV, like I know I can do occasionally? And while they are watching TV, are they sitting front on, or looking to the side?
What part of their pelvis do they sit on, as this can affect upper body posture?
Let’s get simple about this. Sit like you stand! If you are having trouble with getting your posture right. Don’t get too perfectionist about it.
Stand tall in a relaxed position, not too stiff and military with the shoulder blades, chin tucked in. Now sit down and maintain that position for 15 minutes every night. For those of you with sedentary jobs this can be a cathartic experience, as you start to pick up on the times you don’t maintain this posture. There is nothing surer: your neck pain and headaches will at least ease.
Give this a try for a week and see how you feel.
