Adelaide Fringe Festival is one of the most exciting times of the year — long summer nights, buzzing streets, pop-up venues everywhere, and a lot of walking. From hopping between shows to standing in queues or wandering the city with friends, your body can cop more load than usual in a short space of time.

As physiotherapists, we see a predictable spike in walking-related aches and injuries during Fringe season. The good news? Many of them are preventable with a little awareness and smart planning.

Common Walking Injuries We See During Fringe.

Even if you consider yourself “active,” Fringe walking is often longer, harder, and less predictable than your normal routine.

Common injuries we treat include:

  • Foot pain (plantar fasciitis & forefoot pain) - Extended walking on hard surfaces in unsupportive shoes can overload the feet, leading to sharp heel pain or aching through the arch or ball of the foot.
  • Achilles and calf strains - Sudden increases in walking volume — especially in flat or unsupportive footwear — place extra strain on the calves and Achilles tendon.
  • Knee pain - Conditions like patellofemoral pain can flare when walking distances increase, particularly with lots of stop-start movement and standing.
  • Hip and lower back pain - Prolonged standing, uneven ground, and fatigue can expose weaknesses in hip and core strength, leading to soreness or stiffness.
  • General muscle fatigue and joint stiffness - Even without a specific injury, many people feel heavy, tight, or achy by the end of a Fringe day — a sign your body is working harder than usual.

Walking in Adelaide’s summer heat adds another layer of stress to the body. Heat affects how your muscles and joints perform, and fatigue tends to set in faster.

In hot conditions:

  • Muscles tire more quickly, increasing injury risk
  • Dehydration can reduce muscle efficiency and increase cramping
  • Fatigue can subtly alter your walking pattern, placing stress on joints
  • Many Fringe-goers push through discomfort because they’re distracted or having fun — which often means injuries aren’t addressed early.

A few simple strategies can make a big difference:

  • Choose supportive footwear - Fashion is fun, but your feet still need support. Look for shoes with cushioning, arch support, and a stable sole. Avoid brand-new shoes for long Fringe days.
  • Build your walking gradually - If Fringe means doubling or tripling your usual step count, your body needs time to adapt. Pace yourself where possible.
  • Take regular movement breaks - Alternate walking with sitting when you can. Gentle calf, hip, and back stretches during breaks help reduce stiffness.
  • Hydrate and fuel properly - Drink water consistently and eat regularly — muscle fatigue increases when your body is under-fuelled.
  • Listen to early warning signs - Pain, stiffness, or heaviness aren’t things to “push through.” Early management often prevents a minor issue becoming a longer-term injury.
