Shockwave Therapy For Hip Pain

Published: March 18, 2021

Do you find yourself placing a pillow between your legs to help you get to sleep?

Do you get hip pain lying on your side in bed, and just can't get to sleep?

Are you a runner worried your hip pain will get worse and stop you from exercising?

Shockwave Therapy could help!

The pain on the outside of the hip can be due to inflammation of the gluteal tendon, of Gluteus Medius and Minimus, where the muscles attach. It can also be where a burse (a fat pad called the trochanteric bursa) can become inflamed. The hip pain may also be associated with a stiff back.

It's an injury affected by hip weakness and postural habits that place the tendons under stress. It requires a full analysis of the hip and lower limb, looking from the foot to the back biomechanics. It can require massage, and specific strengthening exercises for the gluteal muscles as well as impring core stability to control pelvic movement.”

Shockwave Therapy is often useful because the gluteal tendons are connective tissues, not muscle. It puts a significant shockwave through the tissues you apply it to and a pressure wave that brings blood flow back to the area. Tendons and connective tissue do not have much blood supply and can take a long time to heal. Shockwave Therapy artificially stimulates the healing of the tendon.

Shockwave Therapy can also be used to treat the following conditions:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Golfers and Tennis elbow
  • Rotator cuff tendon issues
  • Long-term chronic conditions

How many treatments are required?

Evidence shows a course of four to five treatments have best results. Most clients see an improvement in pain and movement after three, with a success rate up to 90%.

What does the procedure entail?

Shockwave Therapy is administered by one of our qualified physiotherapists for around a three-minute period to the affected area during consecutive weekly appointments. It works through the transmission of high-pressure acoustic pulses via a hand-held applicator.

The treatment is considered safe but can produce some skin reddening or bruising, short-term pain, and cannot be used on clients taking blood-thinning medications or those who have bleeding disorders.

When will I start to see results?

After each session, most clients get a significant reduction in pain and symptoms. Long term it stimulates healing, short term it reduces pain. The best thing is the effects are long lasting and prevents clients have more invasive treatments such as surgery or injections. It shoulder however be understood that Shockwave Therapy is not a magic pill; our therapists will work with you to address all contributing factors in order to achieve the best possible recovery.

If you're suffering from hip pain, have been told you need elective surgery or injections, speak to one of our physiotherapists today to see if Shockwave Therapy could help you.
