The 20th of October is World Osteoporosis Day!
It is a global health awareness campaign dedicated to raising awareness about osteoporosis and osteopenia. As Physios, we play a crucial role in preventing and managing these conditions, particularly through the ONERO program.
What are Osteopenia and Osteoporosis?
- Osteopenia: A precursor to osteoporosis, indicating bone density lower than normal but not yet at osteoporosis levels.
- Osteoporosis: A disease characterised by low bone mineral density, leading to an increased risk of fractures.
Facts about Osteoporosis and Osteopenia:
- Prevalence: Osteoporosis affects millions worldwide, especially postmenopausal women and older men.
- Risk Factors: Age, gender, family history, lifestyle factors (e.g., smoking, excessive alcohol consumption), and certain medical conditions can increase the risk.
- Silent Disease: Osteoporosis is often called a “silent disease” because it may not cause symptoms until a fracture occurs.
- Importance of Prevention: Early detection and prevention are key to reducing the impact of osteoporosis.
The Role of Physiotherapists.
Physiotherapists are well-equipped to address osteoporosis and osteopenia. Our expertise in musculoskeletal health, exercise prescription, and patient education allows us to:
- Assess Bone Health: We can evaluate risk factors, assess bone density (in conjunction with medical professionals), and identify at-risk individuals.
- Develop Personalized Exercise Plans: Tailored exercise programs can help increase bone mineral density, improve muscle strength, and reduce fall risk.
- Educate Patients: We can provide valuable information about lifestyle modifications, nutrition, and fall prevention strategies.
- Address Pain and Functional Limitations: Physiotherapy can help manage pain associated with osteoporosis-related fractures and improve overall function.
The ONERO Program.
At Back In Motion Brighton, we proudly offer the ONERO program, a comprehensive approach to bone health. ONERO is an exercise program developed for people with osteopenia and osteoporosis, designed to help reduce the risk of fractures. It does this by building balance, muscle strength, and bone density. This evidence-based program is proven to improve bone health, as well as helping to prevent falls and reduce the risk of fractures.
Early detection, prevention, and appropriate management are essential for individuals at risk of osteoporosis and osteopenia. If you are concerned about your bone health, consult with your GP and Physiotherapist.
