What is Physiotherapy?

Published: November 20, 2018

Physiotherapy is an evidence based way of assessing, treating and preventing injuries and multiple diseases, without the use of medication. Back in Motion physiotherapists primarily manage musculoskeletal conditions such as back or knee pain, however will also work in some other settings such as in aged care facilities.

What does physiotherapy involve?

Physiotherapy starts with an initial assessment, where a detailed history and physical examination will be performed. Following assessment a physiotherapist will be able to provide a diagnosis of an injury or condition or refer for further investigation if this is required. They will also be able to discuss the most appropriate management for this condition. Usual physiotherapy management may involve a combination of education about the condition, advice on lifestyle changes, activity modification, exercise prescription, manual therapy, exercise classes such as personal training, Clinical Exercise or hydrotherapy, taping, dry needling or specific treatments like Shockwave Therapy. A physiotherapist may also recommend combining management with other disciplines like your GP, a specialist doctor, dietician or nutritionist, exercise physiologists or psychologists to address all aspects of a particular condition.

Is physiotherapy effective?

Physiotherapy care or conservative management should often be the first line of management for most musculoskeletal conditions. Physiotherapy treatment has been shown to be reduce pain in similar amounts to pain relieving medication, however a skilled physiotherapist will aim to treat the cause of any symptoms rather than just temporarily relieving pain. This can allow for safer long term management of most musculoskeletal conditions.

When compared to medication or surgery, physiotherapy is a very safe management option, with few adverse affects. Usually the worst complication of physiotherapy is a temporary aggravation of pain following treatment compared to often serious complications that can occur as a result of medication or surgery. Additionally most surgeries to manage musculoskeletal injuries have better results if someone has undergone physiotherapy treatment and exercise prior to surgery.
