Shoulder pain? It’s a Jam

Published: November 5, 2019

Do you get shoulder pain?⠀

Unless you’ve had an impact injury, we can almost guarantee it’s an Impingement Syndrome. This is when the rotator cuff tendons or bursa get jammed in the shoulder with repetitive activity like gym work. It can come on slowly or quickly, but it stops many people from doing what they love. ⠀

Whilst some massage and hands-on treatment can help, the key to fixing the problem is specific strengthening exercises. Because the shoulder is a ball and socket joint, where the socket is very shallow and loose, the way in which the shoulder muscles control the joint and shoulder blade is crucial. If the muscles get out of balance, will jam on itself. Which is why it’s called in Impingement Syndrome. ⠀

Sometimes poor posture and a stiff upper back can also cause the shoulder to jam on itself. ⠀

Cortisone injections are often performed for this shoulder problem, which can help with the pain, but this only treats the symptom, not the cause. In many cases they don’t help at all, and even when they do – the pain comes back once the cortisone wears off. ⠀

If this is happening to you – make sure you come to us to get your shoulder assessed and the weak muscles, postural problem or stiffness identified. Once this is done, we can give you the exact right exercises to fix the problem. It’s a bit like a puzzle to figure out, but once solved, the right exercises will get you back to full strength and enjoying what you love. ⠀
Feel free to DM any questions you may have about your own shoulder, and someone on our team can help you out. ⠀
