The Effect of Poor Sleep on Developing Low Back Pain

Published: November 1, 2018

Impaired sleep and development of Low Back pain

Impaired sleep predicts onset of low back pain and burnout symptoms: evidence from a three-wave study. Psychology, health & medicine, 1-15. Elfering, A., Kottwitz, M. U., Tamcan, Ö., Müller, U., & Mannion, A. F. (2018).

This study examined 405 working participants who were initially free of low back pain (LBP) and emotional exhaustion, and followed them over a 3 year period to evaluate if sleeping problems were a potential risk factor for the development of LBP and burnout up to three years later. Unsurprisingly, sleep problems commonly preceded LBP and burnout in working individuals.

Although we tend to see patients after they have developed Low Back Pain, the results of this study should encourage everyone to take care to sleep well. There's a whole field of science being devoted to poor sleep and it's developing all the time - because we are seeing links with more and more health conditions. So look after yourself! Switch off!
