Why is having a good quality, supportive pillow important?
On average we spend a third of our lives in bed/using our pillows! Most pillows only have a lifespan of 3-4 years, so if your pillow is any older than this then it’s highly likely it isn’t giving your head and neck the support they require.
Did you know that a human head generally weighs around 4-5kg?! That’s a lot of weight for your neck to hold during the day, let alone all through the night if your pillow isn't supportive - this is why it's important to invest in a good quality pillow that gives your joints and muscles the support they require.
What are the benefits of a supportive pillow?
A supportive pillow is designed to maintain the normal curvature of the neck and head. Some of the particular benefits the right pillow can provide are:
- Reduced likelihood of neck pain as the natural curvature of the spine is maintained
- Can help to manage current neck pain/injuries by providing support to the head/neck
- Reduced likelihood of headaches caused by tight muscles
- Improved sleep and reduced waking throughout the night
