What is the Healthy Ageing Exercise Class?

The class is a 50 minute circuit based exercise session for older adults, with a maximum of eight participants. The class is designed and conducted by a physiotherapist who monitors exercise safety, technique and progression. Exercises are tailored individually to the participant’s relevant injuries or needs whilst focusing on the overall functional goals of; increasing strength, endurance and balance. Your physio will complete a 20 minute assessment prior to commencing classes to ensure you feel safe around the equipment.

Why is exercise important for older adults?

Older adults are advised to complete 20 minutes of physical activity three to five times a week, research shows that:

  • 25% of people between 65-74 years old do no physical activity.

The benefits of physical activity include:

  • Increased brain function

The consequences of inactivity include:

  • Prolonged deconditioning
  • Accelerated loss of muscular strength
  • Mobility disability
  • A higher risk of falls and potential hospitalisation

Finally, some quick facts about falls:

  • 30-50% of people over 65 years living in the community fall each year
  • Over 85 year olds are 10-15 times more likely to sustain a hip fracture compared to 60-65 year olds
  • 54% of falls occur in or around the home
