Lateral ankle sprain (LAS), commonly known as rolled ankle is frequently seen in the general and athletic population. Unfortunately, only half of those with LAS have gone to seek help from health practitioners. If left unmanaged, LAS individuals will have a higher risk in developing chronic ankle instability and experiencing articular surface changes in their ankle joint.
Common complaints of chronic ankle instability include:
- Persistent pain and swelling
- Giving way
- Recurrent sprain within 12 months post injury
- Difficulty returning to work and sports
A high-quality study that got published recently has outlined that early exercise interventions are important for early joint recovery and functionality. The experts strongly advised against prolonged immobilisation of the ankle as it can impede it’s journey to recovery. Ankle support in the form of tape and/or brace can be helpful as it can aid the recovery further. Any modifiable or predisposing factors that can lead to further LAS should also be identified and addressed accordingly.
