What to expect at your physiotherapy appointment

What do physiotherapists do?

Physiotherapists use evidence-based theories, manual therapy techniques and exercises to treat a variety of conditions. Some commonly treated conditions include;

How long is a physio appointment?

At Back In Motion Camberwell your first appointment will be 40 minutes in duration. The first part of the appointment involves a FREE initial assessment, including specific questions regarding your health and medical history and some physical tests to come up with a diagnosis and plan. The remainder of the first appointment will involve treatment.

Typically subsequent appointments will run for 20 minutes unless otherwise advised by your treating Physio.

Physios have a wide variety of treatment techniques up their sleeve as every client, injury and goal is unique. Depending on your reason for attending, Physio treatment can include any of the following:

What to wear to a physiotherapy appointment

It’s a good idea to wear something comfortable and easy to move in when you attend your physio appointment. During the session your Physio will protect your modesty with a gown and towels.

Will physiotherapy treatment hurt?

For some conditions the aim of physiotherapy treatment to improve mobility and reduce pain. Treatments including massage and joint mobilisation can cause some discomfort in the area treated to aid in the restoration of function.

It is important to inform your Physio if you experience significant pain as this is unusual.

Do I need a referral to see a physiotherapist?

No, you don’t require a referral from a medical practitioner to see a Physiotherapist in Australia. If your doctor, specialist of health expert has provided you with a referral with specific information then please bring it along to your appointment.

Back In Motion Camberwell does accept Chronic Disease Management Plan referrals from General Practitioners.

How many times will I need to see a physiotherapist?
