Getting Up Safely After a Fall

Falls are the leading cause of admission to nursing homes. Ultimately, keeping fit and active is the best way to prevent a fall, with exercises focusing on lower limb strength, balance and coordination important. However, the ability to get up from the ground is paramount, and often people don't know they can't until it is too late. Check out below!

Knowing how to get up safely after a fall can help reduce the risk of further injury. If you're not seriously injured:

  • Roll onto your side.
  • Push up onto your hands and knees.
  • Crawl to a sturdy chair or sofa.
  • Place your hands on the seat.
  • Bring one foot forward into a kneeling position.
  • Push through your hands and front foot to stand.
  • Turn and sit down to rest before walking.

If you have severe pain, think you may have broken a bone, hit your head, or can't get up, call for help or emergency services.

Practicing this technique when you're well can help you feel more confident if you ever experience a fall, however if you are concerned ensure to practice when someone is with you.

Staying fit and active where possible will assist you with your ability to get up, and also to reduce your risk of falling in the first place!
