Falls!

Falls Prevention

Falls are one of the most common reasons people lose confidence in their mobility as they get older—but the good news is, many falls are preventable. In fact, most falls don’t happen “out of the blue.” They’re usually the result of small changes over time—like reduced strength, balance, or reaction speed.

The key is catching these changes early.

Here are a few simple ways to reduce your risk:

1. Keep your legs strong Strength in your legs plays a huge role in stability. Simple exercises like sit-to-stands (getting up from a chair without using your hands), step-ups and calf raises can make a big difference.

2. Train your balance Balance can be improved at any age in a safe environment. Even standing on one leg while holding onto the kitchen bench is a great place to start.

3. Stay regularly active Long periods of inactivity can lead to stiffness and weakness. Gentle, consistent movement—like walking, swimming and bike riding —help keep your body active and steady.
