Lipoedema
JUNE IS LIPOEDEMA AWARENESS MONTH
Lipoedema is an abnormal build up of fat in the body, typically on the legs and arms. It almost only affects women and can affect up to 11% of the female population.
It is different to normal fat, as it is much more difficult to get rid of and difficult to lose weight. In some cases, symptoms may be quite manageable, and in other cases it can lead to increasing pain and affect mobility.
Symptoms include:
-a “cuffed” look at ankles and/or wrists
-dimpled look on the skin
-pain and heaviness in the areas most affected
-bruising
Treatment can include:
-physiotherapy
-compression wear
-compression pumps
-liposuction
