Prehabilitation!

Published: March 28, 2025

Prehabilitation or “Prehab”

What is “Prehab”?

Prehab is a term in healthcare that is used before a surgery or medical intervention has taken place. It may involve exercises, lifestyle changes, activity modification and breathing techniques. The idea is to build resilience and capacity in the body to be able to better cope with and manage medical procedures.

You may benefit from “Prehab” before:

  • Cancer treatment (such as chemotherapy)
  • Joint replacement surgery (such as knee or hip replacements)
  • Any major surgery that may involve prolonged time in hospital or resting
  • Before starting a new sport or activity

Benefits:

  • Keep or improve your health and fitness
  • Reduce complications post surgery
  • Reduce side effects post treatment or surgery (eg. Reduce fatigue levels)
  • Reduce risk of injury
  • Improve recovery post surgery - the stronger that you go into a procedure, the stronger and quicker you will recover

How long?

Ideally prehabilitation will last 6-12 weeks, however you need to allow a minimum of 4 weeks to see the benefit of the program.

How is know if you would benefit?

Make an appointment with your physiotherapist to discuss how this program would look and be incorporated into your life. We will liaise with your specialist/surgeon and your GP to make sure that we are best preparing you for you optimal surgery and recovery.

Please feel free to give us a call on 95801985 or book online here to discuss Prehab, or any other aches and pains you may have.
