Osteoporosis & Healthy Bones

Published: January 27, 2026

Osteoporosis is a condition in which the bones become weaker and fragile due to several factors, including hormonal changes, diet, decreased activity or genetic factors. There has been a breakthrough with medications and lifestyle modifications to help maintain healthy, strong bones, but Physical Exercise and Balance Training is still an integral part of management.

Bones, like muscles, are a tissue in the body that can strengthen with the appropriate exercise loads and training. Pilates, Hydrotherapy and gentle walking are great exercise options, but these do not have the required force or load to create meaningful change in bone density. So what can?

Strength training, individualized to your needs and condition, is the most important form of exercise to maintain and strengthen healthy bones, as well as improving muscle power, functional strength and confidence, which can help prevent insufficiency fractures and safeguard bones in high impact trauma. At Back In Motion Balcatta, our Healthy Bones program is designed, and backed by research, to facilitate strength training in a safe, controlled environment, progressing and challenging you in a group setting to keep you living long, healthy and strong.

Below are a variety of exercises that we perform in the session, which also include balance, coordination and rehabilitation exercises that are individualized to help prevent falls and build strength and confidence.
