One key thing that we have learnt from our collective wealth of experience is that slow and steady sometimes does win the race! When it comes to getting back in shape or restarting your favourite athletic activity, it’s important to understand that our bodies need to be gently re-introduced to these tasks to avoid injury. Here are some of our easy tips to avoid injury and get the best results when getting back into health and fitness!
- Don’t start where you left off! For the gym-goers out there, if you were squatting 50kg before it is important to understand that your body will need some time to adjust to doing this exercise. Start off with a lower amount and give yourself time to slowly build up again!
- If you’re looking to get back into running, try a combination of walking and jogging to slowly build this back into your routine. Walking for 1 minute and running for 1 minute can be a nice gentle way of exposing your joints to the increased demands of running without high risk of injury.
- Try something new! The world is your oyster and many of us have had time to reflect on what we miss, what we want to leave in 2020, and what we want in 2021. Try picking up a different form of exercise that you may find more enjoyable. Lately I’ve really enjoyed yoga and breathing exercises!
- Most importantly, do something that you enjoy! If you’re trying to lose weight and running isn’t appealing to you; there are plenty of other ways to burn calories! Swimming, walking, cycling, running, boxing, resistance training, and Pilates are but a few examples!
