What can cause neck pain?
There are a variety of factors that can contribute to the onset of neck pain. Factors such as osteoarthritis, disc injuries, muscle spasms can all lead to the development of neck pain. Environmental factors that can overload joints and/or muscles can be poor posture (prolonged sitting at a desk) or even incorrect pillow height.
One common neck pain presentation we see at the clinic is due to muscle spasm. This is called a wry neck and can cause a lot of pain and stiffness. Due to the muscle spasm in your neck, you will particularly find it very difficult (and painful) to turn your head in one direction. Other neck movements may also be affected depending on the severity of your wry neck.
What can cause wry neck?
- Sudden or jolting movements
- Awkward sleeping posture
What to do if you are suffering from a wry neck?
Wry necks always respond well to heat (obviously make sure it’s not too hot that can cause a burn) and generally last 2-3 days. If you are concerned or if it isn’t resolving in 2-3 days, then it is best to come to the clinic and see one of our lovely physiotherapists to diagnose the cause of your neck pain.
