Why Does My Back Hurt?

Postural lower back pain can be caused by a number of factors:

  • Sitting in one position for too long
  • Sitting or standing with ‘bad’ posture
  • Your work station set up incorrectly or it hasn’t been individualised (one size fits all approach doesn’t work for everyone)
  • Poor biomechanics
  • Stiffness in other areas of your body, or tightness in connecting muscles (ribcage, hip, pelvic, lower back, chest)
  • Poor breathing patterns.
  • Overload (increasing exercise or activity too quickly, where your body doesn’t have the underlying tolerance)
  • A sudden onset of pain (acute injury) in your lower back, can be caused by prolonged sedentary postures which causes an injury to a structure in the lower back.

As you can see there are many contributing factors to having postural lower back pain. A person can have one or multiple reasons for the pain and are very specific to an individual. It requires in-depth questioning and practical assessment of your lower back and surrounding joints, as well as a postural and movement assessment to determine your cause, diagnosis and individualised treatment approach. Physiotherapists are highly educated in this area.

One thing we can confirm is that the stronger you are, the more exercise or activity you, do the better adapted to load and positions your body will be. This also means that changing positions or postures regularly, walking, being stronger or generally moving more may help your postural lower back pain.
