Adolescent Athletes Lacking Accurate Athlete Development
It is very common in an allied health clinic to have an athlete aged 12-17 seeking our services after an overload injury that has transpired during their sporting season.
What is an overload injury?
An injury that occurs when too much stress is placed on a certain part of the body, it can cause pain, swelling, tissue damage etc.
How/why do they occur?
Repetitive movements without the strength and/or endurance to deal with these movements, e.g overtraining
Most athletic teenagers will train multiple times a week, play numerous games on the weekend, run around every recess and lunch time and choose all the sport-based subjects at school. The main thing that is missing from this strenuous regime is strength work. Yes, participating in all these activities will subsequently make these athletes stronger in their certain fields, however, there is a lot more that can be achieved with an individualised exercise program.
An exercise program prescribed and delivered by an Exercise Professional will improve;
- athletic prowess
- strength/endurance/power
- bone density
- balance
- self-esteem
- body awareness
and most importantly decrease the risk of injuries.
Athlete Development at BIM Rosny Park
Over the last 12 months the Athlete Development Program (also known as the BIM academy) has been workshopped, branded and has begun at our clinic.
Who?
Athletes: aged 12-17, any sport, any position, any aspiration.
Coaches: Jacob Calvert (Physiotherapist), Charles Apted (Exercise Physiologist)
Where?
In the gym at our Rosny Park clinic.
When?
Currently Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday 4pm-5pm (subject to change)
Why?
We are passionate about the preventative approach to healthcare as opposed to an intervention-based approach. Growing up, both coaches (Jacob and Charles) played youth sports at a high level and did not have this information and/or option to improve their ability through a safe and evidence-based environment. Therefore, we wanted to give this generation of young athletes the best chances possible to improve their sporting experience and abilities and maximise their potential whilst simultaneously learning how their bodies work and utilising their attributes to their advantage.
