Australia is suffering from a dire shortage of frontline physiotherapists in much needed locations, according to a report by the Australian Physiotherapy Association.*
Now Australia’s leading and fastest growing physiotherapy group are championing the charge to fix the imbalance.
The Back In Motion Health Group will donate hundreds of physiotherapy hours to disadvantaged communities as part of work4significance® Day 2014.
work4signficance® Day, to be held on Tuesday September 2, is the major annual fundraising event for SOS Health Foundation. On this day, physiotherapists across Back In Motion’s network of more than 40 practices, will donate a day of their fees to the Foundation.
Back In Motion Health Group founder and physiotherapist, Jason T Smith said poverty and remote locations prevent many people from accessing much needed physiotherapy services.
“Some regional areas have less than 34 therapists for every 100,000 people yet they have greater health challenges than those living in metro areas,”** Mr Smith said.
“One in eight Australians lives below the poverty line and many people simply cannot afford physiotherapy. Unfortunately, people are forced to live with chronic pain and illness without the health giving benefits of physiotherapy.
“Back In Motion believes everyone should have access to the benefits of physiotherapy and this is why a number of Back In Motion Health Group practitioners have jumped on board to give their time for work4signficance® Day.
“It’s a great feeling to provide real relief to people that need real help.”
During 2013 work4signficance® Day, Back In Motion Health Group donated 526 hours towards the SOS Health Foundation initiatives.
Mr Smith said work4signficance® Day has already achieved a great deal for people in need.
“Last year, work4signficance® Day raised more than $71,000 which has greatly assisted many projects in the last 12 months,” Mr Smith said.
“These funds also mobilise physiotherapists and other volunteers to take park to take part in outreach missions in Palm Island and rural areas of Australia such as North East Arnham Land.
“The Foundation has been given approval to open a permanent physiotherapy clinic on Palm Island a remote Aboriginal community of 3,000 in Queensland offering physiotherapy, Clinical Exercise group classes, sports physio, nutrition and exercise plans as well as trained health workers.
“And, late August, a second pro-bono clinic was opened in Brisbane city.
“The SOS Health Foundation is making a real difference in the lives of disadvantaged Australians in remote communities and in our major cities. Back In Motion is proud to be involved in such a worthy cause where our skills make a positive change for people in need.”
