Published: 30 August 2013

On Wednesday 28 August, Back In Motion Founder, Group Director and Physiotherapist, Jason Smith, was asked to represent the Australian Physiotherapy Assocation (APA) and the physiotherapy industry as whole to comment on a newly released report on musculoskeletal disorders on ABC24 TV.

The report revealed the enormous burden that musculoskeletal disorders will have on the Victorian community. Jason made the following comments about the report highlighting:

  • Musculoskeletal diseases affect more Australians than any other national disease priority area. This includes diabetes, mental health problems, cancer and cardiovascular disease
  • The total cost of Musculoskeletal conditions in 2012 was $55.1b which includes the cost of medical care, lost productivity, carer expenses and the societal burden of disease
  • It is projected that 3.1 million Victorians will be affected by musculoskeletal disorders by 2050
  • A commitment by the health minister to support the development of an advisory group to the Victorian department of health, to include leading clinicians, researchers, health service managers and consumers to provide advice on system wide approaches to address the starling statistics revealed in the report that was launched today by arthritis and  osteoporosis Victoria.
  • A commitment to work with the Commonwealth to raise awareness of the national impact of musculoskeletal conditions, and develop strategies to address them.
  • The APA applauds the commitment of minister Davis and the Napthine government in taking this step. The APA looks forward to being involved in this initiative, with the ultimate aim if addressing this enormous burden on the Victorian community.
