Men’s Health Physiotherapy

Published: 11 June 2014 - Men’s Health

What is men's health physiotherapy?

If you’re a man, there has probably been a time in your life when you’ve been told in no uncertain terms by your mother, friend or partner that you should see a medical professional about a health issue you’ve had.

We men are notoriously bad when it comes to managing our health, especially if it requires more effort than eating a salad or going for a jog.

If you’re a woman, there’s probably a man in your life - husband, son, father or brother who you know should be seeking help, but isn’t.

It’s not uncommon for men to push health issues aside, often hoping that if we ignore it, it will go away or to just keep quiet about our private health issues and suffer in silence.

We shouldn’t. YOU shouldn’t.

If you are having issues with your health, specifically male related health issues - delaying seeking help can not only make things worse physically and mentally, it can also lead to suffering in other areas of your life such as your happiness, relationships and working life.

How can a men’s health Physiotherapist help?

Men’s health physiotherapy works in conjunction with urologists, exercise physiologists, sexual health physicians & psychologists with the goal of restoring men's health. A men’s health physio specialises in physical conditions unique to men, many of which involve the pelvic floor muscles and male genitalia. Commonly, these issues appear in mean as a result of prostate or other surgery and include:

  • Incontinence
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Overactive bladder
  • Pain in the pelvic region

Men’s health physiotherapists work in conjunction with urologists, exercise physiologists, sexual health physicians and even psychologists with the goal of restoring your health.

A man’s health issues can often be a very complex situation, particularly when it comes to prostate cancer rehabilitation, preparing for prostate surgery, incontinence, bladder & bowel control, erectile dysfunction (ED), sexual health issues or chronic pelvic pain.

All of these symptoms can be crushing for a man. But if you suffer from any of these conditions, you’re not alone.

Many men are seeking treatment for these issues and regaining their confidence, improving their lifestyles and taking back control.

Chronic Pelvic Pain

Chronic pelvic pain is a broad term often used to describe unexplained pain in the pelvic region.

It is vitally important if you are experience chronic pelvic pain to see a specialist immediately as many conditions that cause pelvic pain, such as urinary tract infections and bladder infections require antibiotics for treatment.

Others causes for pain can be an enlarged prostate gland which could be a sign of prostate cancer and further investigation should be undertaken for a complete diagnosis.

Chronic pelvic pain can often mean damage to the Pudendal nerve, either from trauma or compression from sitting down for extended periods of time. This damage has more recently been referred to as Pudendal Neuralgia.

In this case, exercising the right muscles within the body can reduce pressure on the nerve and relieve these symptoms.

If you have any of these issues, you don’t have to suffer in silence. There are many support groups around Australia and many men’s health physiotherapists that can help you get a diagnosis and advise a treatment plan to get your life back on track.
